Why Blog?

August 16, 2023

I never thought of myself as someone who'd want to write a blog. I don't like talking about myself or being the centre of attention and I don't live a particularly cool or exciting life. I don't even like reading opinion pieces or watching Youtube personalities myself.

More importantly, what does writing a blog say about me? How self-aggrandizing do you need to be to believe your opinions are worth reading? Do I even have anything to say? Why do I want people to listen to me? Should I even be listening to myself? Questions like that have constantly batted against my mind even as I began to set this blog up. Will I have anything to write? What if I start a blog and I find out I really don't have many thoughts in my noggin worth sharing- is that something I'm prepared to face?

Buut, there's one very good reason I continued setting up this blog- I love teaching and helping people. If I framed a blog as a tool to grow people's knowledge and to introduce fresh ideas and perspectives, suddenly it became very attractive to me.

There's actually a great example of this: Fred Rogers, aka. Mister Rogers. For those who don't consume American media and who don't know who he was, there's no better way to show the person he was than to watch this clip of him testifying in the Senate to defend public broadcasting budget cuts.

He was, by all accounts, the real deal

When Mister Rogers saw the powerful medium of television and how it could be used to communicate with people, he just saw the good ways it could be used to help people, where other people saw wealth or fame. I think it's really something to live by and constantly keep in mind when you are using any sort of social platform as we all too often focus on the wrong things. Just because fame is misused, doesn't mean it is inherantly bad.

OK, but enough about my Hamlet-style humming and hawwing on writing a blog. Why should you read it, and who am I?

I'm a 25 year old Irishman with a Bachelors in Computer Science and am about half a year into founding a new Financial Tech company, EasyAccrue, alongside two other people. I like to bounce around into different topics and work areas, to keep things interesting. If that interests you and you have something to gain from listening to my experience, stick around. I also tend to end up in weird places on the Internet!
